Updated 2026-10-26 · 3 min read
Job forms, higher-study applications and scholarship portals often ask for your marks as a percentage, but your grade card shows CGPA. Each board or university has its own way to convert.
This guide lists the commonly published formulas and shows how to use the CGPA to Percentage Calculator. Remember: your university's own rule, printed on the grade card or in its ordinance, is always final.

Step by step
- Choose CGPA ⇄ percentage Open the calculator. The 'CGPA ⇄ percentage' tab is for converting in either direction.
- Pick your board or university rule In 'Board or university rule', choose CBSE (Class 10), AICTE (engineering, 10-point), VTU, Mumbai University, or 'Simple × 10'. The formula used is shown below the list.
- Enter your CGPA Type your CGPA (out of 10). The percentage appears next to it. You can also type a percentage to get the CGPA.
- Compare with other rules The tool also shows your CGPA under three other rules and a rough 4.0-scale value, so you can see how much the formula matters.
- Need CGPA from semester SGPAs? Switch to 'SGPA → CGPA'. Enter each semester's SGPA and credits, use Add semester for more. You get the credit-weighted CGPA, the simple average and the approximate percentage.
Common CGPA to percentage formulas
These are the formulas the calculator uses. Universities can change their rules or publish their own conversion tables, so always confirm with your grade card or university.
| Rule | Formula | Example |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (Class 10) | Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 | 8.6 CGPA = 81.7% |
| AICTE (engineering, 10-point) | Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 8.2 CGPA = 74.5% |
| VTU | Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 8.2 CGPA = 74.5% |
| Mumbai University (7-point+ CGPA) | Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11 | 8.0 CGPA = 67.8% |
| Simple × 10 (Anna University and many others) | Percentage = CGPA × 10 | 8.2 CGPA = 82% |
How CGPA is calculated from SGPA
Most universities use a credit-weighted average: CGPA = sum of (SGPA × credits) ÷ total credits. A semester with more credits counts more.
Some universities use a simple average of SGPAs. If yours does, enter the same credits for every semester and the two results will match.
Common mistakes
- Using the CBSE 9.5 rule for a college degree. It is meant for CBSE Class 10 grades.
- Converting each semester to percentage and averaging. Convert the final CGPA instead, unless your university says otherwise.
- Writing a converted percentage on a form that asks for CGPA. Give exactly what the form asks for.

How do I convert CGPA to a 4.0 GPA for studying abroad?
