How to Sign a PDF Online for Free (Draw or Upload Your Signature)

Updated 2026-10-26 · 3 min read

Offer letters, rent agreements, school forms and office documents often arrive as PDFs that need your signature. Printing, signing and scanning takes time and makes a blurry copy.

The Sign & Fill PDF tool lets you place your signature, your name, a date or a tick mark anywhere on the PDF. The PDF is signed on your device and is never uploaded.

Is this a legal digital signature?

The tool places an image of your signature on the page, just like signing a printout and scanning it. It is not a certificate-based digital signature (DSC), which some government filings and tenders require. If a document specifically asks for a DSC or Aadhaar-based eSign, use a service that provides that.

For many everyday documents, such as offer letters, internal forms and declarations, a signature image is commonly accepted. If in doubt, ask the person who sent the document.

Tips for a clean signature

  • For an uploaded signature, sign with a dark pen on plain white paper and take a sharp photo in good light.
  • Draw slowly. A signature drawn on a phone screen often looks better with a stylus or when the phone is turned sideways.
  • Use blue ink if the receiver needs to tell the signature apart from printed text.
  • Make the signature about the size of the signature line; do not let it cover printed text.

Common problems

  • The PDF will not open: it may be password-protected. Remove the password with Unlock PDF (you need to know it), then sign.
  • You need to sign several documents together: merge them with Merge PDF first, then sign once and place the signature on each page that needs it.
